The Cloud is on Auckland's waterfront.

Sitting on Queens Wharf in the city centre waterfront, the Cloud has played an important role in hosting some of Auckland’s biggest events over the past 13 years.

Designed as a temporary structure to host an inner-city fan zone for the Rugby World Cup 2011, this unique venue has gone on to enjoy a much longer life span than originally intended. It has hosted exhibitions, functions, cultural events and has been a much-loved fan venue for major events like the Olympic Games and the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Cloud is aging however, and maintenance is becoming increasingly expensive. A decision will soon need to be made on whether to continue to invest in the structure, or remove it.

Here are some key facts about the Cloud, and the parties involved in deciding its future:

  • The Cloud is fully owned by the Crown.
  • The Crown and Auckland Council have agreed that the council will manage the Cloud as an event space, receive all the income and incur all the costs of maintaining the structure.
  • Within Auckland Council, there are two council-controlled organisations with specific responsibilities for the Cloud.
    • Tātaki Auckland Unlimited operates the venue on behalf of the council group, receives all the income and meets the expenses including maintenance.
    • Eke Panuku Development Auckland is the asset manager for Queens Wharf i.e. the deck the Cloud sits on, on behalf of the council group.
  • Any decisions on the Cloud’s long-term future will be made by the Crown and Auckland Council.

Whatever future decisions are made, the Cloud has earned a place in the hearts of Aucklanders as a special venue.
